Echeveria agavoides, commonly known as the Moulded Wax Agave, is a striking evergreen succulent admired for its clean form and vibrant colouring. It forms a neat rosette of thick, triangular leaves that resemble the shape of a small agave. The smooth, fleshy leaves are pale green with sharply defined red margins and tips, creating a polished, waxy appearance. Each rosette grows up to 20 centimetres across, remaining compact and symmetrical. During late spring and summer, slender stems rise to around 40 centimetres, carrying clusters of delicate, lantern-shaped flowers that glow red with yellow tips. This balanced mix of structure and colour gives the plant a sculptural quality suited to both contemporary and natural displays.
Growing Conditions
Echeveria agavoides thrives in bright, direct sunlight and benefits from a warm environment between eighteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. It prefers a free-draining cactus compost that prevents excess moisture around the roots. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, especially in cooler months. Adequate light encourages the red edges to deepen in colour, while consistent warmth supports steady growth. When grown indoors, place the plant near a south- or west-facing window where it can receive several hours of sunlight each day. Avoid misting, as trapped moisture may damage the rosette centre.
Care and Maintenance
This species is low-maintenance and ideal for beginners. Remove faded leaves from the base to keep the rosette tidy. Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted succulent fertiliser. Repot every few years in fresh compost to maintain soil health. Protect from frost if placed outdoors in summer.
Environmental Benefits
Echeveria agavoides adds structure, colour, and light reflection to indoor plant collections. Its compact, drought-tolerant nature makes it a sustainable and elegant choice for home or office settings.
